Born in 1900, Irvin Shorty Shope was a traditional Western painter, illustrator, and muralist from Montana. Influenced by painter Edgar S. Paxson, Shope worked as a cowboy and held various full-time jobs while painting at night. He was also a founding member of the Cowboy Artists of America. Shope’s work was dedicated to depicting the authentic West, and he died in 1977.
